AWSR: Victorian Title, National Champs & Some History At Sungold Stadium

Warrnambool’s Sungold Stadium roar’s back into action this Saturday night with highlight’s including the Victorian Wingless Sprint Championship, a pair of national champions in their respective divisions while a third generation Wigzell returns to the venue that his Hall of Fame Grandfather conquered in 1974.

The WIN Television Victorian Wingless Sprint Championship has attracted a staggering 65 entries and the recent announcement that the venue will host the 2013 national title for the division ensures Saturday night will be a sample of what’s in store next summer. The AMCA Nationals will contest a round of their action series with a strong field set to take to the high banks.

Last month’s Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic featured an unveiling of Mat Eastham’s Victory Lane Racegear #88 in a fitting retro tribute to the Kevin Fischer owned 1974 Classic winning car known as ‘Suddenly’. Hall of Fame member Bill ‘the Wizard’ Wigzell was the driver of Suddenly when it won in 1974 and Saturday night will see Wigzell’s Grandson Todd at the wheel of the famous SA #88, this time in a Wingless Sprint.

The 30 year old South Australian ace is fresh from victory in the 2012 Australian Wingless Sprint Championship in Sydney and will be keen to gather his first laps at the venue where his title defence will be set for decision in 2013.

A former V8 Dirt Modified star, Todd turned to the Wingless Sprint class in 2008 and promptly won the SA title at Mount Gambier in 2010.

The strong field of interstate invaders is led by national champion Wigzell however the 2010 Australian Champion Daryl Clayden will also visit the venue keen to continue his success in the class. A former Sprintcar racer that has contested the Classic in past years, Clayden’s experience will see him as a leading contender this weekend.

Defending state champ is David McKay and he qualified for the national title A-main in Sydney recently and will look to recapture some winning form this Saturday night. A perennial contender, McKay has been a multiple feature race winner in recent seasons.

The field is littered with former state titleholders while track specialist Jeff Judd looks to be a likely front runner. Jye Saunders qualified for the national title field and along with Stevie Trigg both have had success at Warrnambool.

Paul Robilliard was in scintillating form recently at Simpson while Brad Warren has also shown brilliant speed with a feature win at Geelong a recent highlight.

A leading contender from New South Wales will be Adam Butler while Jay Waugh is also a contender with both drivers tasting state title success in the past.

Meanwhile Campbell Hughes won the recent Australian AMCA National championship held at Hamilton and will be keen to display the number 1 plate. A multiple feature race winner throughout the country, Hughes will be tough to tame at the wide open expanses of Sungold Stadium.

Tim Reidy is a speedy customer and is a past winner of the Northern Territory title where the third generation star showed he isn’t afraid to travel! Reidy along with Paul Forrest, Nathan Fawns, Jamie Collins, Paul Sullivan and Darren O’Reilly will all be keen to stretch the legs of their V8 powered AMCA Nationals this Saturday night.

Public gates open at 4pm this Saturday with racing set to get underway at 5:30pm.
