The final race meeting of the 2009/10 Wingless Sprint season in Victoria is set to be run and won this Queen’s Birthday long weekend at Horsham’s Blue Ribbon Raceway.
Topping the contenders is former Australian champion Rory Button, who heads over the border to take on some of the big names in Garden State wingless racing. The driver who ran second to Button in his 2009 Australian Title victory, Brad Warren, is fresh off feature race success at Drouin Speedway last weekend and since his last visit to Horsham also has a taste of Sprintcar racing under his belt.
Two names returning to competition for the first time since March’s Australian Title are Mark Walsh and Steve Trigg. Both drivers rode out monster wrecks during their respective title campaigns and will be hoping for a successful return to the track. Walsh claimed feature race victory at the Blue Ribbon season opener back in October and again stood on the podium when the Parr Motorsports Super Six Series visited in February. For Trigg, he has shown unbelievable speed this season aboard the Bakery Fresh backed J&J and should be well and truly in contention.
Steve Hodder is another driver who has shown plenty of form in 2009/10 and will look to finish the season on a high, while Ashley Armistead has found good car speed during the autumn months.
Kris Lacey will again take to the wheel of the Paul Drew owned Johnboy for a final tilt, with Peter Green and Ray Klemm also keen to get to the pointy end of the field.
Rookie racers Luke Cole and Wylie Munzel will both make the trek to Horsham, while Mount Gambier’s Kahn Aston is set to make his open wheel debut.
The format will see drivers contest three heats on Saturday, followed by a further two heats on Sunday along with the all-important feature race.
All cars are to be in the pits by 2pm Saturday, with racing to commence at 3pm. On Sunday, cars will be required by 12 noon with racing scheduled to get underway from 1pm.
